The Good Food District

FOOD SOVEREIGNTY

The Good Food District (GFD)

Our GFD initiative is a community-rooted place-making effort to address food insecurity in the neighborhoods of the Greater Southeastern San Diego (GSESD). We are creating an Equitable Food Oriented Development (EFOD), which aims to elevate and integrate urban agriculture as a key component of community revitalization in food-insecure neighborhoods.

The GFD is our model for transformation, and aims to incorporate arts and culture and wealth building as tools for place making. During the first phase of the work we are implementing community engagement activities that contribute to developing neighborhood-based social capital.

The next phase will focus on wealth building activities that strengthen existing small businesses in the area and identifies new food related businesses. Interim activation projects will yield recommendations for long term use of public assets that reflect the values and identity of the neighborhood stakeholders. In partnership with developers and land owners, we believe the act of growing food uses soil as an ally in re-building neighborhoods.

OUR GOALS

Improving Health & Wellness in Southeastern SD

01  Production

We use programs such as our Neighborhood Growers Collective and creating more Community Growing Spaces to boost healthy food production throughout Greater Southeastern San Diego. This is an essential first step in our process to strengthen the food supply chain and build food sovereignty in this region.

02  Distribution

Our People’s Produce Mobile Farmers Market brings fresh locally-grown produce into the neighborhoods of Greater Southeastern San Diego at numerous weekly markets. We only sell produce grown in SD County, with much of the produce grown in Southeastern SD. Hyper-local produce means a fresher healthier product, better for the environment, and better for our local economy.

03  Community Engagement

Through Community Work Days, Events, and our newly-formed Community Rising program we are able to connect with our community members to give a better understanding of the importance of our food system in Greater Southeastern San Diego. These events build a community connection around health, and help create relationship wealth fostering a stronger, more resilient community.

04  Community Food Hub

Our journey through food justice brings us to our most ambitious undertaking: building The Village community food hub in Mt. Hope. This multi-use facility will encompass production, distribution, and community engagement all in one place by featuring a good food public market, commercial kitchen for classes and demos, healthy food vendors, community gathering space, and a community garden.
