Who We Are

Our Mission

To serve as a catalyst for resident-led, community-rooted experiences that BUILD stronger neighborhoods; IMPROVE the neighborhood food supply chain; STIMULATE collective investment in better health; and MAXIMIZE the impact of investment to address social inequities.

Our Vision

Project New Village envisions Southeastern San Diego as a community of active neighborhoods supporting and contributing to the health, wealth and well-being of community members.

Our Goal

Improving fresh food access in Southeastern San Diego is part of a broad-based movement to build social equity, giving way to healthy neighborhoods.

1994-2024

30 Years Strong!

Project New Village was established in 1994 as a community hub for collaborative efforts to increase social wellness. In 2008, PNV began its journey to explore and develop strategies to address inequities in the local food system; and became a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization to strengthen our ability to champion our identified charitable cause in 2010.

Our goal of improving fresh food access in Southeastern San Diego is part of a broad based movement to build healthy neighborhoods. PNV has embraced urban farming and community engagement as our primary tools to improve food access, food security, and environmental wellness. We use a social determinant of health model which views food equity and self-determination as key factors for achieving better health.

Project New Village is transforming the political and economic environment using neighborhood-based agricultural cooperatives as strategies of resistance to food insecurity and removing barriers that impede universal access to good food through community/civic engagement and building alternative food ecosystems.

OUR GOALS

Improving Health & Wellness in Southeastern SD

01  Production

We use programs such as our Neighborhood Growers Collective and creating more Community Growing Spaces to boost healthy food production throughout Greater Southeastern San Diego. This is an essential first step in our process to strengthen the food supply chain and build food sovereignty in this region.

02  Distribution

Our People’s Produce Mobile Farmers Market brings fresh locally-grown produce into the neighborhoods of Greater Southeastern San Diego at numerous weekly markets. We only sell produce grown in SD County, with much of the produce grown in Southeastern SD. Hyper-local produce means a fresher healthier product, better for the environment, and better for our local economy.

03  Community Engagement

Through Community Work Days, Events, and special garden gatherings we are able to connect with our community members to give a better understanding of the importance of our food system in Greater Southeastern San Diego. These events build a community connection around health, and help create relationship wealth fostering a stronger, more resilient community.

04  Community Food Hub

Our journey through food justice brings us to our most ambitious undertaking: building The Village community food hub in Mt. Hope. This multi-use facility will encompass production, distribution, and community engagement all in one place by featuring a good food public market, commercial kitchen for classes and demos, healthy food vendors, community gathering space, and a community garden.
