The Neighborhood Growers Collective: Building A Network of Food Growers in SESD

We’re looking for community members with a passion for gardening and food growing to join us in creating a large collective of food growers locally who could eventually contribute produce to our People’s Produce Mobile Farmers Market. We want to create health and wellness throughout San Diego using urban agriculture as a means to combat food insecure neighborhoods. This is good for the environment, good for our health and well-being, and helps to build strong community connections. All levels of gardeners and growers welcome – we’re here to provide support and connect people with resources to create a strong neighborhood collective.

The PNV Neighborhood Growers Collective meets every second Saturday of the month from 9-10:30am at the Mt. Hope Community Garden, 4269 Market St., San Diego, CA 92102.

    Thelma

“I’m growing sapotes and tangelos for the MFM. For myself and my family I’m growing strawberries, cherry tomatoes, potatoes, and herbs. I also have a salad bar (kale, lettuce) that the critters have been enjoying! I grow food because it’s a fun experiment! Donating to the Mobile Farmers Market is very satisfying because the food goes to a great cause.”

    Cristina

“My name is Cristina.  I am a grower and a teacher, and sometimes those two areas of my life don’t work in sync, and part of my journey is learning the rhythms of both to create more harmony in my relationship with them.

I just harvested some lettuce, beets and carrots.   I am growing tomatoes, zucchini, bell peepers, corn, and sweet potatoes.  I also have some volunteer potatoes and pumpkins growing from the fall crops. My backyard is dedicated to fruit trees and medicinal plants such as mugwort, yarrow, sage, tulsi, and comfrey.
Growing food and plants is a spiritual practice that connects me to the land, my ancestors, my culture and my heritage.  In a world with so much destruction and atrocities, it is the thing that shows me hope and the abundance of life.”
